Dominican Republic Project
Humanitarians and Sustainability and the SDSU Sports MBA Program, in collaboration with
Engineers Without Borders and the San Diego Padres Foundation are implementing community-
based development projects in the Dominican Republic. Many Major League Baseball (MLB)
franchises currently operate talent development facilities in the Dominican Republic, however,
there are large disparities among the surrounding communities.
HandS and its partners are working to develop comprehensive community assessments,
action plans and design services that will aid in community driven development projects that
encompass an interdisciplinary approach connecting aspects of engineering, public health,
and education. HandS has gained support by the local communities, companies, NGOs and
universities.
We have just conducted our assessment trip to the Dominican Republic in December 2010. The
trip was a success. We have begun making the necessary connections with the communities, and
we anticipate immense collaborative efforts that will identify possible sustainable solutions for
these communities.
